Best Apple Crumble Pie Recipe + Apple Picking

Nothing says fall quite like apple picking. When the girls were younger we'd make a day of it, in Oka or wherever we'd go. Now, all we have to do is drive 5 minutes and we have a choice of 4 farms.  A quick 45 minute apple picking activity is all we need;) the real fun comes in making things with those apples.

Apple Crumble Pie

Simple steps:  Pie crust +  Filling  +  Topping

1 Simple pie crust (love this one from Anna)
or store bought (I like pillsbury)

Mix together

10 large Macintosh apples (peeled and loosely chopped)
1 tsp each cinnamon, nutmeg, or whatever spices you like.
1 tsp lemon juice
Pinch of salt
1/4 cup mix of white + brown sugar
1/4 cup of flour

If you've never made a pie crust from scratch, it's unbelievably easy and forgiving. I measured everything and Ava mixed it. It's that easy (but messy!) We sort of like messy here though!

Hand mix

3/4 cup unsalted butter softened
1 cup flour
1 cup quick cooking oats
Pinch of salt + cinnamon
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
*if you made your own crust throw in about 1/2 cup into the mix, if not, no worries it'll still be delicious!

Adjust the topping to taste. Once mixed, taste it. You may want to add sugar, or even more butter! It should be crumbly and look very corse and moist. See photo below.

Assemble Pie!

I like a mountain of apples. Pour topping on top of apples and press together to compact it a bit. You can them even place some on top loosely to get a variety if your crust topping.

Bake at 375 degrees for about 45 minutes (for firmer apples) or bake at 375 for 20 minutes then lower to 300 for another 40 minutes for softer apples. Let sit for 10 minutes before cutting into, if you can wait!

It was so delicious, gone in seconds!!!
